Vernal Equinox 2013: Iridescent Clouds and Sun Halos on March 20 : A first selection of a variety of iridescence in Dali'esque shaped clouds through atmospheric optics captured during mid-day on March 20, 2013. It was a perfect day and location to witness these iridescent clouds on and just below the Arctic Circle in Alaska. It was a mesmerizing and surreal experience that I was fortunate enough to be part of and take part in.

Photos: California Northern Lights - Mt Shasta - July 15, 2012 : It was a spectacular night with colorful Northern Lights combined with dozens of shooting stars and a beautiful alignment of Jupiter, Venus, the Pleiades and crescent moon at dawn. A 36-hour geomagnetic storm occurred on July 14-16 in response to a coronal mass ejection associated with the X1.4 solar flare of July 12 (maximum at 16:49 UTC). The visual feast began when colorful auroral displays became visible around 22:15 pm (PDT) on July 14 (05:15 UTC on July 15) during the initial severe storm period. Throughout the night, a perfectly clear sky - revealing the Milky Way in much detail - enabled the observation and capture of delicate ray structures within the auroral curtains. One of the highlights of the night was the ISS and Soyuz diving into the aurora around 02:15 am (PDT). The Soyuz TMA-05M docked with the International Space Station at 04:51 UTC on July 17.

A total of 2,534 images (59 GB) - captured between 11:11 pm on March 28 and 05:34 am on March 29, 2012 - are combined at 15 frames per second to a 2:58 min. time lapse movie.

Aurora Time Lapse: The Northern Lights at Eagle Summit - March 26-27, 2012 : GOING FOR THE SUMMIT

Spring time has suddenly arrived in Alaska with temperatures above 0°F ( -18°C) which Alaskan's refer to as "balmy".

It posed a great opportunity to capture the Northern Lights from Eagle Summit on March 26-27, 2012 - and it had been a long time coming (12 years) top of the wish list shooting location above the tree line. Migrating Caribou herds are passing through here during this season and I spotted just a few of them on the following day - along with a daily dose of Moose encounters at lower elevations, a wolf crossing the road at night near Cripple Creek and seeing an owl early in the morning at Pedro Dome - all just a few days ago.

Around 2:25 am I was surprised by a major outburst of activity with one of the best displays of the past two weeks.

Aurora Time Lapse: The Northern Lights at Eagle Summit - March 26-27, 2012

Photos: The Northern Lights at Eagle Summit, Alaska - March 26-27, 2012 : Spring has arrived in Alaska's Interior with warmer temperatures above 0°F (-16°C), which local Alaskans refer to as "balmy". This posed a great opportunity to shoot from Eagle Summit at this time of the year, a location usually too cold or otherwise hostile for capturing Northern Lights during the Winter. While I knew that it would become a promising night, I did not at all expect such an epic one. I was capturing images for an all-night time lapse movie, when around 3 am I was surprised by a strong outburst of activity with some of the best auroral displays of this season.

Photos: Aurora at the Yukon - Circle, Alaska - March 27-28, 2012 : Last night I was treated to yet another wonderful Northern Lights show. This location never seems to disappoint for clear skies and multi-colored auroras. The Yukon river is still completely frozen at this time of the year and poses a great open space for capturing the lights. The show started early around 9:30 pm and kept on going into the morning twilight hours. The strongest part of the display occurred just after midnight and continued until about 2:30 AM. A time lapse video of this night is going to be posted soon.

Aurora Time Lapse: Yukon Aurora - March 27-28, 2012 : Spring has sprung in Alaska with temperatures above 0°F which posed a great opportunity to capture the aurora at Eagle Summit and from Circle, Alaska on the following night - when I was treated to yet another wonderful Northern Lights show. This location never seems to disappoint for clear skies and multicolored auroras. The Yukon river is still completely frozen at this time of the year and poses a great open space for capturing the lights. The show started early around 9:30 pm and kept on going into the morning twilight hours. The strongest part of the display occurred just after midnight and continued until about 2:30 AM. Time lapse videos of this night are going to be posted in this gallery during the next few days.

This was by far the clearest night of the past two weeks. The Milky Way was very well defined and there were so many stars visible that it was difficult to find even the most common constellations (at first). The aurora photos were captured from the air strip at Chena Hot Springs early on March 23, 2012. The day time images and videos toward the end of this gallery were taken on March 22 during a Northern Lights Tour gathering at the Moose Lodge, followed by the sunset snow cat experience.

Aurora Time Lapse: Spring Equinox in Alaska - March 20-21, 2012 : Location: Snowshoe Creek near Wickersham Dome, Alaska, USA
Dates: March 20 - 21, 2012

Between 11:03 pm on March 20 and 3:06 am on March 21, a total of 2,372 images have been captured and combined to a 2:38 minute time lapse video. Note the setting planets Jupiter and Venus shining through clouds at the North-Eastern horizon in the first part of the clip. Two outbursts of auroral activity and dozens of satellite flybys can be seen later on - also including a few satellite flares, a full 360° camera rotation, auroral display overhead, Mars in constellation Leo and the occasional race truck on it's way to (or from) the arctic slope supplying Prudhoe Bay.

Time Lapse Details: 2,372 images during 4 hrs of continuous shooting, totaling 55 GB of data, condensed to a 2 min. 38 sec. video

It was a fantastic Northern Light display during the morning twilight hours, following a strong solar wind shock at 12:37 UTC on March 15, 2012. Patiently spending a long night at Cleary Summit (near Fairbanks, Alaska) I was rewarded at dawn by the appearance of very strange looking auroras - triggered by the onset of a major geomagnetic storm as a coronal mass ejection impacted Earth's magnetosphere.

Observers at high latitudes witnessed strong auroral activity on March 1, 2011. The source of this disturbance was the arrival of a high speed coronal wind stream combined with a southward pointing interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), producing long periods of minor to major geomagnetic storm conditions (G2 on the NOAA scale) between 12:00-17:00 UTC on March 1.
